Concerts in the Park
Summer
Concerts in the Park, free music sponsored by Vashon Park District,
Vashon Allied Arts and Windermere, continue July 24,
when Los Angeles-based band Incendio returns for a
lively night of extreme guitars! Incendio’s richly textured music is
rooted in a variety of styles from flamenco to jazz fusion.
Incendio’s stamp is a high energy sound, between Latin and rock with
a dose of jazz fusion. Last summer’s Incendio show moved indoors due
to weather, but weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the band or
their enthusiastic audience.
Incendio is comprised of bassist Liza Carbé and guitarists J.P.
Durand and Jim Stubblefield. Touring throughout the West, from
concert halls to outdoor festivals, The group has released five CDs
and one DVD.
August 7, Seattle musician and Cornish alumni,
Darrius Willrich brings urban soul to Vashon.
Singer, songwriter and band leader Willrich plays a mean keyboard
for several Seattle area groups, including the fabulous group, Soul
Provider and his own Darrius Willrich Project. He has composed for
four feature film scores.
His romantic, sexy soul music has been compared to the likes of
Donny Hathaway, Lionel Richie and one of his musical heroes, Stevie
Wonder. Initially influenced by Wonder’s genius, Willrich has
birthed his own original style and possesses an innate musical
ability to combine multiple musical genres.
“Willrich plays in a creamy harmonically sophisticated style on the
Fender Rhodes that recalls Chick Corea in the Miles Davis electric
band,” said music critic, Paul de Barros.
August
21, Island Jazz Quintet will play their
brand of smooth, cool jazz in the Park. For 10 years, IJQ’a cabaret
sound has been heard in venues throughout the region and
internationally. The home-grown band has received respectable
airplay on regional radio including KPLU. IJQ recently released
their first, self-titled sell-out 2000 CD, available on CD Baby.
IJQ will play material at the August Park gig, including eclectic
new arrangements by Hank Williams, Peggy Lee and Bob Dylan. Expect
to also hear standard favorites. “We’ve been learning some new
material, playing as a trio and sometimes as a quartet, but this
show will be the whole group,” says Maggie Laird, who plays melodica
and sings sultry vocals to the articulate sounds of fellow
musicians: Richard Person, horns; Todd Zimberg, drums; Todd Gowers,
upright bass; and Tom Wilkins, keyboard. “…This quintet would be
right at home in a New York cabaret," says Victory Review.
Sept.
4 for the Series finale, Portage Fill
brings their swingin’ big band dance sounds to Ober. Concerts in the
Park are intended for all ages. Please no alcohol in the Park.
